Green aquamarine is a pale green to greenish-blue variety of the mineral Beryl, the same mineral family that includes:

• Emerald (green from chromium or vanadium)
• Aquamarine (blue from iron)

The name "aquamarine" comes from the Latin aqua marina, meaning "sea water." Most people picture a blue gemstone, but aquamarine naturally occurs across a range from greenish-blue to distinctly green.

The color is caused primarily by iron within the crystal and different forms of iron and the way they are arranged in the crystal determine whether the stone appears:

• Deep blue (less common naturally)

Many jewelers heat aquamarine to around 400–500°C (750–930°F). This changes some of the iron responsible for the green tones, leaving behind a purer blue color. As a result:

• Most bright blue aquamarine has been heat treated, a treatment that is stable and widely accepted.
