Trilobites are an extinct class of marine arthropods known as Trilobita. They were among the earliest complex animals to appear in the fossil record. They first emerged in the oceans roughly 521 million years ago during the early Cambrian period and became a dominant component of the Cambrian explosion. They proved to be incredibly resilient, surviving through six geological periods for nearly 270 million years before finally going extinct during the Permian-Triassic mass extinction approximately 250 million years ago.
