The Chinese Dragon has the body of a snake, the antlers of a deer, the scales of a fish, the claws of an eagle, the eyes of a demon, and the face of a quilin, which is a mythical beast whose body is composed of fire.  The Chinese Dragon took it's form during a single lifetime -  The life of the Yellow Emperor.  Each time he conquered a kingdom, he added it's emblem to his own.  The Yellow Emperor began with his personal mark; a snake.  By the time he had forged his empire, his ensign, the symbol for China itself, had become a new mythical beast.  They say that the thoughts of the Chinese people made the dragon into a real being; one that touches the sky and offers protection to the middle kingdom.
